Pattaya (พัทยา) is a popular tourist resort on the North Gulf Coast of Eastern Thailand, located 150 km south-east of Bangkok. Pattaya is most famous for its go-go and beer bars, but local authorities has made efforts to provide more family-friendly attractions and activities, and specialist conference and golfing facilities. Although the sex industry is still going strong and sex tourism remains the key money earner for Pattaya, the resort also attracts local families and holidaymakers from far and wide.
Efforts by the local authorities over the past few years have improved the quality of the beaches, but they are still lacklustre by Thailand's standards, and over-development has long since destroyed some of the natural charms the area once had. However, the plethora of hotels and guest houses, and easy access from the capital and airport, make it a popular weekend getaway. Catering for over five million tourists yearly, Pattaya is also able to offer an excellent range of eating choices and a wide variety of things to do and see. Its population is a colorful mix of nationalities and ethnicities from near and far.
Pattaya offers good hotels prices compared to other popular seaside destinations in Thailand, with a huge range of hotels and serviced apartments that cater for everyone from bachelor punters to package tourists. Opt for the heart of the girlie bar action off Beach road, South Pattaya, or go upmarket in North Pattaya and Naklua. Alternatively head to Jomtien beach if you’ve come for the sun loungers. Great restaurants are scattered across Pattaya to suit all tastes, while the nightlife is found near the walking street and Beach road lanes. Very few hotels have their own beach, but you’re never far from the sand.
If Pattaya has a heart then Walking Street is it. For many people this area is Pattaya. You will see all sorts of people in this area at night from mum and dad with the two kids to those who go for the night life and ladies. They all come for one reason and that is the sex trade that
thrives along Walking Street. For the family visitor it is to look at it from the outside and for the single guy the reason are obvious. If you are the latter then you may at times feel like you are a zoo exhibit.
The main entertainment area on Walking Street extends for about 500m. On it you will find many gogo bars, open-air bars, pubs and discos. Some bars have live music while some are like those in the Soi 7 and 8 area. Prices are generally a bit higher here to compensate for higher rents.
Off Walking Street there are many sois to explore. Some of Pattaya best gogo bars and night life are located on these sois. If you do get to Pattaya and head straight to Walking Street before trying some of the other areas don't get stuck in Walking street. some people do this and it is a shame. Wall king Street is a good area for night life but it is not the whole of Pattaya. Make the effort to explore the other areas that the city has to offer. You may find that you prefer these areas. Walking Street is great but it has its disadvantages. Walking Street during the day is a lot different than at night. During the day traffic is allowed. Most bars are either closed or have few customers. It is more like a normal road in the daytime.
